Careers

All of our programmes provide students with outstanding analytical and problem solving abilities including numerical and computing ability as well as enhanced communication and presentation skills. A degree in Economics, Finance and Accounting prepares students for a wide variety of careers. Well known people with degrees in Economics include Cate Blanchett, Arsene Wenger, Tiger Woods, Kofi Annan, Mick Jagger, Famke Janssen, Paul Newman and Arnold Schwarzeneeger.

Even in challenging times employers value economic graduates highly, with  job opportunities in a variety of fields such as regulation, public policy, teaching, insurance, accountancy, finance and banking, as well as the opportunity to undertake further study. There are also a number of opportunities in the civil service. One prime example is the newly established  government Economic and Evaluation Service unit (IGEES)  which aims to support better policy-making in government through enhanced economic and policy analysis expertise. The work of the unit will support departments in evaluating policy and expenditure options, value for money exercises; cost benefit and regulatory impact analyses; and regulatory and competition issues. 

Our programmes in Finance prepare students for a variety of careers in the private and public sectors such as the International Financial Services Sector, Retail and Investment Banking, Stockbroking and Financial Market Research. Typical career options include Financial Analyst, Economic Analyst, Stockbroker, Accountant, Tax Consultant, Treasury Consultant, Management Consultant and Teacher.

Our Accounting programmes prepare students for a variety of careers in both the private and public sectors, and in every industry. Typical career options include Accountant in practice/industry, Management Consultant,  Liquidator/Receiver, Financial Analyst, Stockbroker, Tax Consultant, Treasury Consultant, and Teacher.

A number of websites provide information on current openings for economics, finance and accounting graduates. Some of these include Careerjet, IrishJobs.ie and Monster.ie. Some sites target particular regions of the country. For example lookwest.ie lists job openings in the west of Ireland.
